Parental Consent 101: Supporting Parents Responding to Requests for Consent to Marry a Member of the Bahá’í Faith
Sometimes we are faced with situations with our children and their relationships that are challenging. Perhaps you are uncertain or embarrased about asking for help from people you know. It may help you to have someone with a neutral and compassionate perspective who can ask insightful questions and coach you with creating new ideas and actions.
Education and Coaching sessions can help parents as individuals or couples with:
“Bahá’í law places the responsibility for ascertaining knowledge of the character of those entering into the marriage contract on the two parties involved, and on the parents, who must give consent to the marriage.” (Universal House of Justice to a National Spiritual Assembly: Lights of Guidance, #1231)

- Planning your responses to children or other involved family members
- Discerning when it’s important to resist pressure from children

Susanne's Education and Coaching Approach
I believe every individual and couple is unique, so each session is tailored to your needs, strengths, and challenges. I use insightful questions and systematic tools and materials to assist the process, but I apply them with flexibility as the watchword. I believe in God and draw on spiritual sources to guide couples to build relationships and marriages on a foundation of character strengths and spiritual principles. I am most experienced in working with people with Christian and Baha'i Faith religious connections.
I am a passionate advocate for healthy and happy individuals, relationships, and marriages. I believe that these are the foundation for a united and happy family and community. I regard marriage preparation and strengthening as key elements in divorce prevention.
Education and coaching sessions are a relationship of trust between the client(s) and me, and I do my best to earn that confidence. Our sessions are a mutual consultation process, with the expectation that you will carry forward with agreed actions in between sessions.
I will draw on a wealth of books, materials, and experience in guiding you through your relationship or marriage challenges. I have developed many of my own resources as well as
collaborated with many of the most well-known experts in the field. See some of these materials in the Store!
I do not require that you sign up for a specific number of sessions ahead of time, and we will decide together on the frequency. Sometimes we will only choose to meet one time. For others, we may meet a number of times for a few weeks or months. Relationship and marriage education and coaching tends to be short-term.
As a coach and not a therapist, I prefer to refer those dealing with issues such as abuse, addictions, and sexual identity issues to others.
